Keeping playgrounds safe with mobile inspections.

The Challenge

In 2016, administrative staff in the City of Lorsch, Germany, began looking for solution to better manage playground equipment inspections. Their goal was to map the entire inspection process, record defects and needed repairs, and document work completed in accordance with legal requirements – all with a single, centralized system.

The Solution

Luckily, VertiGIS FM was exactly what they were looking for! To begin implementing VertiGIS FM as a new playground management tool, information about playgrounds and playground equipment was imported from Microsoft Excel to VertiGIS FM. In cases where information was missing or incomplete, field comparisons were done using mobile devices. Using the camera functionalities available in VertiGIS FM, photos were added to complement existing information. Commercial information and technical data sheets were also added to VertiGIS FM.

The Result

Since May 2017, visual inspections of playground equipment and management of operational activities have successfully been completed with VertiGIS FM. Each year an annual inspection takes place in the City of Lorsch where inventory is taken of over 200 playground objects. With VertiGIS FM, this annual inspection is easier than ever! Information collected during the inspections can be added directly into VertiGIS FM with mobile devices in the field or by staff working in the office. To date, several hundred measures have been created to remedy equipment deficiencies and concerns ranging from cleaning sand play areas to replacing entire playground structures.

“The number of complaints after the annual main inspections by the expert office has decreased significantly,” says Lorsch city inspector Marcus Bauer. After seeing the success of VertiGIS FM for managing playground equipment, uses for the system have been expanded to include taking inventory of the city’s trees, traffic signs, and other transportation objects. “It is good to have all information in one system”, adds another Lorsch city employee.
