Globally, VertiGIS works with partner organizations that support the expansion and reach of our technology suites. Last month, a group of these partners met in Victoria, BC for our annual VertiGIS Studio Partner Summit. The event provided opportunities for advancing VertiGIS-partner relationships, discussing emerging VertiGIS innovations, and connecting through a shared passion for GIS.
A time-honored tradition at the VertiGIS Studio Partner Summit is a hackathon – a social event where partners collaborate to develop solutions using VertiGIS Studio technology. The goal of this year’s hackathon was for partners to create an app that integrated with Factal – a news data provider that reviews and validates global news sources.
Partners were split into 3 groups and given 4 hours to create a VertiGIS Studio Web application that integrated with the Factal REST API to return a customizable list of news sources. Despite only having 4 hours to complete the task, the applications created were truly impressive and innovative!
Below are the apps that our partners created during the hackathon.
This first application finds information about natural disasters based on user-inputted parameters. Users can select the location, risk-type, and dates they are interested in, and the app will compile a list of relevant news sources. This app presents a great example of how GIS can be used by various user-groups – in this case it has applications for demographics ranging from community members to emergency support teams.
Next was an application that helps users search for news stories that pertain to specific interests. Users can customize the time-range they want to see stories from, and the app will query a list that fits their specifications. What a great way to streamline the process of finding information about specific topics!
Lastly, an application created to support users in finding information about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. With user-inputted keywords and date ranges, the app will compile a list of appropriate news sources. And, with built-in Google Map functionalities, users can even see exactly where their news sources are coming from!
A great job to all our partners who participated! The apps created were all exceptional examples of how VertiGIS Studio can be used to solve everyday challenges. A key takeaway from this year’s hackathon was how easily our partners used VertiGIS Studio to create functional – and practical – applications… in only 4 hours! Imagine what you could do with VertiGIS Studio and access to complete development resources.
