Zurich Airport Takes Off Towards the Future – From PoC to Transition Strategy with VertiGIS

All New Articles

Zurich Airport is undergoing a fundamental technological modernization with the replacement of legacy GIS tools GEONIS and WebOffice by the latest technologies from Esri and VertiGIS. The goal is to establish a future-proof foundation for operating and further developing the GIS infrastructure through modernized architecture and innovative tools.  As the first step in the process, the team at Flughafen Zürich AG completed a successful Proof of Concept (PoC) project with VertiGIS that demonstrates how cutting-edge technologies can drive the transformation of GIS infrastructure.

During the PoC, the transition was thoroughly evaluated and tested. The focus of the tests was on VertiGIS Networks and VertiGIS Studio – ranging from the migration of existing GEONIS data into the Esri Utility Network to the evaluation of new application and configuration possibilities. These tests were complemented by the use of ArcGIS Enterprise as well as cloud-based hosting and managed services.

The impressive results of the PoC not only convinced stakeholders but also paved the way for the next phase in collaboration with VertiGIS. Zurich Airport will now work closely with VertiGIS to develop a comprehensive transition strategy that will enable a gradual and seamless migration to the future-ready technology platform. The insights and practical experiences gained during the PoC provide clarity on the requirements and opportunities of a full-scale transition, marking an important milestone in the further development of Zurich Airport’s GIS infrastructure.

With this fundamental renewal, the airport is optimally positioned for digital transformation – and VertiGIS, with its innovative products, is at the heart of this change.
