How ERP & GIS Integration Enhances Field Work

All Blog Articles

What are the benefits of a synced SAP/Maximo and GIS infrastructure for field work and mobile data collection?

Field technicians go out to collect critical information about spatial assets. Typically, the majority of this information must be collected in the Geographic Information System (GIS). The location of the asset is one example, but a lot of other details are typically also stored within the GIS. However, other information, such as maintenance reports or the condition of certain assets, is often kept in an ERP like SAP® or Maximo. A good example: a field worker needs to create a notification that a certain asset is not in good working condition and should be fixed. This type of information is often stored in the ERP instead of the GIS.

But how many devices, systems, and programs do you want your field workers to handle? Maybe one smart device for the GIS plus a laptop for some mobile ERP application? Even if you send your field worker out with only one device, then he or she would still need to handle two (or more!) software applications for the same asset. This is not very practical for a field worker who is pressed for time, and also leaves a huge margin for error. IT Managers typically find that well-designed apps for field work have the highest potential for efficiency and data accuracy. VertiGIS Integrator is a tool specifically developed to keep your ERP and GIS in perfect sync, making multiple data entries about the same asset redundant.

In recent years, Google has made a map-centric approach to field work extremely popular. At VertiGIS, we agree that a mobile app to collect spatial information should be map-centric. Esri and VertiGIS have developed fantastic tools, such as ArcGIS Field Maps or VertiGIS Studio Mobile.

Staff can now collect information in the field (even offline), which will be synced across multiple systems right away, or once you have a mobile internet connection. On the server side, VertiGIS Integrator – certified for integration with SAP ERP – will make sure that all information will be synced accordingly. The administrator may configure what information to collect and where the information should end up – in SAP ERP, Maximo, or the GIS.
