Stability, performance, and optimized workflows for more than 1,000 users story
CFL (Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois) is Luxembourg’s largest private employer with more than 5,000 employees. As a central pillar of the national mobility strategy, CFL operates passenger and freight transport as well as infrastructure services. The star-shaped rail network covers around 300 km with approximately 100 operating locations. In addition to passenger transport (with regular international connections to Belgium, France, and Germany), its business areas also include freight transport, an intermodal terminal, and a large logistics center. Since March 2020, all public transport (bus and rail) in Luxembourg has been free of charge. Sustainability and efficiency are key challenges.
Challenge
Since 2017, CFL has been using VertiGIS’ WebOffice, initially for infrastructure data. Today, more than 1,000 employees have active access to the platform. With growing use, old server structures, and increasing demands on stability, performance, and user-friendliness, the time was ripe for the switch to VertiGIS Studio. The central requirements for the software remained the same: data should be accessible centrally, easily, and paperlessly—a modern way of working that involves all interested users through good user management and high user-friendliness.
Solution
The switch to VertiGIS Studio was carried out in close cooperation with VertiGIS. Together, the existing applications were analyzed: Which functions are used most? Which workflows should be adopted and which improved? The goal was a clear migration strategy without any loss of functionality, preserving existing strengths while creating room for optimization. At the same time, CFL’s IT department implemented a completely new server structure that perfectly supports the stable and high-performance operation of VertiGIS Studio.

Result
Instead of a few large, difficult-to-manage projects, CFL now focuses on many smaller, clearly structured projects. This allows different departments to efficiently implement their own topics – from environmental data to safety-critical applications such as a fire department access card for quick access to track information in an emergency.
The map is always in the foreground, offering employees the ability to access relevant data quickly and easily. This is complemented by powerful search and filter functions—such as the kilometer point search, which is a particularly important feature. These functions make everyday work noticeably easier for employees and help to make expert knowledge from various departments centrally accessible.
The advantages for CFL are obvious:
- Greater transparency and clarity thanks to smaller, topic-specific projects
- Expert knowledge from various specialist systems (CAD, planning, surveying) is centrally accessible to all
- Improved user-friendliness and performance
- Linking of infrastructure, environmental, safety, and operational data on a single platform
- The close integration of VertiGIS Studio with Esri products opens up additional possibilities and ensures the future viability of the solution.
Accompanied by tests, feedback, and internal training, the migration was implemented step by step over the summer of 2025. This means that CFL is ideally positioned for future requirements
CFL is also planning mobile solutions for the future in order to be able to provide optimal coverage even in areas with poor network coverage.
