Why Evolving What Already Works Beats Starting Over

Telecom networks never stand still. Over the last few decades, core transport and technologies have evolved again and again, each shift bringing new capabilities, new infrastructure, and new demands. Today, operators are looking at another wave of change, driven by cloud, APIs, and AI. But the systems and data that underpin today’s networks cannot simply be left behind. Modernization isn’t about starting again. It’s about building on what already works.
The Network May Be Changing. The Fundamentals Aren’t
In many ways, the challenges telecom operators face today are no different than they were 20 years ago. At the core of it, operators still need effective network inventory management: a consolidated inventory, and a clear understanding of the relationships between every element, the physical infrastructure in the field, the equipment and transmission devices, and the services that depend on all of it. That’s essentially unchanged for decades, and it’s the core of what we do with VertiGIS ConnectMaster.
What has changed is the technology underlying the tools themselves. There is an expectation now for stronger workflows, for APIs that integrate powerfully across systems and across an organization, and for AI that can help teams get more value from that data.
A Framework, Not Another Standalone Product
We think about VertiGIS Neo as a framework rather than a product, because we don’t want to lose the established functionality that VertiGIS ConnectMaster has built up over three decades. Some platforms in the market are AI-capable and cloud-ready, but they really just sit as frameworks, or as data models. Think of a framework as instructions for what a toolbox could look like, and a data model as the toolbox itself, empty, with nothing in it yet. What we want to deliver is a toolbox that’s already full of tools, so users can go and build something useful with it straight away.

Evolving Instead of Replacing
I hear a common concern from operators: so many technology rollouts feel like a rip-and-replace, a vendor telling you the old solution is gone and here is an entirely new one. That is not how we think about modernization. Our approach is to focus on the customer’s actual problem rather than a fixed set of functions, and let cloud infrastructure, hybrid architectures, and AI get introduced progressively around that, while users keep working with the capabilities they already know.

That progressive, organic evolution matters because adoption depends on it. We need the people actually using these tools day to day, not just the leadership signing off on them, to see the value.
This applies well beyond telecommunications too. Many of our utility customers need to document their electrical infrastructure, but they often operate their own fiber network as well, so the same consistent framework and architecture has to support both.
AI Is Everywhere in the Conversation, But Data Comes First
It’s genuinely difficult to have a conversation with a telecom customer today, new or existing, without talking about AI. But AI doesn’t change what has to come first: understanding the value of the data you already have. Operators have invested significant time and effort capturing their infrastructure in inventory systems like VertiGIS ConnectMaster. The next step is putting that investment to work, understanding how it can improve service delivery and how it can make operations run more efficiently.
That’s usually where the most useful conversations start. Most new customers come to us because they’re already aware, often painfully aware, of the limitations in their current data or their existing inventory systems. We ask what their biggest issues are, and we’re fortunate to have a wide enough range of tools to either meet that need directly or combine tools across our product range to get there.
The Foundation for What Comes Next
Network operators don’t need to choose between protecting what they’ve already built and preparing for what’s next.
