The Challenge
After nearly 20 years of successfully using WebOffice, the Schwandorf District Office has decided to gradually transition its WebGIS applications to VertiGIS Studio technology. This modernization provides the opportunity to implement future-proof, scalable WebGIS solutions while also allowing the district office to addresscomplex spatial challenges more effectively. The goal was not simply to recreate the system’s existing functionalities but also to streamline workflows and introduce new, innovative features.
The Solution
VertiGIS Studio makes it possible to implement a wide variety of workflows that were previously configured within WebOffice. One standout example is the creation of search forms customized for specific user groups. During the migration, the staff at the Schwandorf District Office took the opportunity to enhance and extendexisting WebOffice searches, using automated workflows to improve flexibility and functionality.
For example, a workflow was developed to assist with land parcel searches. It allows users to combine multiple criteria– such as municipality, district, parcel number, owner, or ALKIS key– in a structured, hierarchical way. The search results can be customized to ensure clarity, even when dealing with large data sets or extensive field value lists. Additionally, features like user-group-specific search permissions, query logging, and multi-parcel searches were added.
Beyond search functionalities, the district office staff can now use workflows to manage map selections. Users can predefine topic groups and access specific map layers based on their choices. Additional workflows have been implemented to streamline tasks in specialized departments. One notable improvement is the ability to search for road sections or stations using external data. With just one click on a road in the map window, users can access detailed information on the corresponding road section via a REST interface from the Bavarian Road Construction Administration. Roads can also be located using a preconfigured search function integrated with this interface.

The Result
A key part of the project involved the thorough review of existing WebOffice workflows. This process ensured a clear understanding of how workflows were used in practice and allowed for meaningful grouping of functionalities. Combined with targeted training, this approach enabled the district office to quickly and smoothly implement the application in VertiGIS Studio. The migration project benefited from the expert advice and guidance from the VertiGIS team.
“The result of our migration to Studio is an improved WebGIS application that not only recreates the functionalities of WebOffice but also introduces intuitive workflows, making it even easier for users to search for and utilize data,” says Peter Pollinger from the Information and Communication Technology department at the Schwandorf District Office.
